Our History
The Story of Allen’s Clam Bar
At Allen’s Clam Bar, we believe in treating every guest like family, and it’s been that way since the beginning.
Our story began in the 1940s, when Cliff Allen, grandfather of current owner Winfield Allen Jr., opened a humble roadside seafood stand in the heart of New Gretna. Believe it or not, the pole in the center of our dining room marks the original end of that stand!
In 1966, Cliff’s son, Winfield Allen Sr. and his wife Joan, had a vision for something more. In true small-town spirit, they closed in the walls over a single weekend, transforming the seafood stand into the early version of the restaurant so many of you have come to love.
By 1976, Allen’s Clam Bar officially became a sit-down restaurant, where locals and visitors could enjoy classics like deviled clams, crab cakes, and french-fried lobster tail. These favorites still grace our menu today.
Over the next two decades, Winfield Sr. and Joan, with the help of their children, Teri, Tammi, Tracey, and Winfield Jr., continued building a legacy of fresh, flavorful seafood and genuine hospitality.
In 1996, we sadly lost Winfield Sr., but the heart of Allen’s never faltered. Winfield Jr., alongside Joan and the rest of the family, carried on the mission with love and pride. After Joan’s passing in 2019, we remained committed to honoring the family legacy with every plate we serve.
And now, continuing to evolve while staying true to our roots, Allen’s Clam Bar added a full bar in November 2023, giving guests the perfect place to enjoy a handcrafted drink alongside their favorite seafood dishes.
For over 60 years, Allen’s has been a staple in the New Gretna community, built on family, tradition, and great food. Whether you’re a longtime regular or visiting for the first time, we’re proud to welcome you into our story.
